SubterfugaThis time, one of my bioplastics became part of Léna’s dance production, transforming into a tangible presence on stage. Poetically referred to by the team as “peau”, this 5-meter-long piece introduced a mineral dimension to the set. Its form recalled a cave fragment inscribed with a poem in Tifinagh - the ancestral script of the Berber languages of southern Algeria. About R.u.in.es:&nbsp;R.u.in.es draws on an Algerian family history that is fading with time to invoke the ghosts of the flesh and the unresolved stories that haunt bodies across generations. Inspired by Berber mythology and Kabyle roots, Léna Sophia Bagutti delves into blurred memories, projections, and physical impressions fossilized in the body, seeking to reverse time and imagine new possibilities in the face of the destruction of Algerian heritage. This artistic proposal is as much about the industrial history of materials that are difficult to dispose of, such as plastics, as it is about current explorations into the development of new materials capable of integrating and/or disintegrating harmoniously in different environments. The series “A nos épaves” takes as its starting point the plastic waste from Lake Leman that has washed up in the Pro Natura nature reserve at the Pointe à la Bise site. It was the occasion for a collaboration with Manon Briod, exploring ideas of digestion through banners of bacterial polymers and organic waste (bioplastics, food pigments, sand and algae) and Géraldine Honauer, exploring recycling in relation to ideas of “abstract” waste (visualised as poster). As a central element of the project, the reader provides an opportunity to share questions, thoughts and references that have emerged within the practice of Anne-Laure Franchette during the development of the series, in relation to the context of the biennial and of the nature reserve. It compiles photo documentation of the plastic waste collected on site, a waste lexicon, bioplastics samples, research and press articles which allow me to open up themes of conservation, production, value and materiality, examined through the perspective of plastic and its alternatives. ︎︎︎Credits: Anne-Laure Franchette &amp; Mathieu Pochon, foodculture days, TETI Group and SAE Greenhouse Lab. Together, we unfold the three chapters of the publication “Mobile Soils” by TETI Press: investigating the mineral and rooted discussions of the underground, looking at the layered and planted conversations on the ground, and finally exploring the circulating patterns across the overground. “Underground”, the first dinner in the series, explores the invisible textures of the soil, its living organisms, and prophetic qualities. How can the unseen layers of the underground be made visible? What spectral presences insist on being revealed to the inhabitants above? How do we negotiate the pull of mythic exploration and industrial extraction, the force of the global and the lure of the local? The dinner returns to Orpheus and Eurydice, combining readings with topical dishes echoing the chapters of the first underground section in Mobile Soils. Traversing beyond the subterranean into the plane in which we most frequently encounter plant matter, the dinner investigates the cycling of nutrients amongst plants, illustrating the circulatory forms inherent to cultivation. Using a terminology other than anthropocene, she takes us towards another reality, that of a "thick present" (mille feuilles); made up of infinite reflections, struggles and initiatives invisibilized by History (the one written by those who rule, those who win, those who dominate). She criticizes the Anthropocene for being egocentric and terribly full of itself. How can a geological era envisaged in thousands of years suddenly be attributed to such a volatile human presence? With chthulucene, she summons up a new chimerical entity between "khthốn"; subsoil, earth, humus in Greek and "Pimoa Cthulhu", a small spider from northern California. The spider's legs evoke the tentacles of an octopus, an image very present in the philosopher's imagination. The word tentacle comes from the Latin "tentare", which translates as "to feel". Donna suggests that we think in terms of contact with the ground. It is interesting to confront our present situation, the way our societies have pushed our ressources and environnement, to their limits with the vision of Elisée Reclus, a french geographer of the 19th century (see below), who foresaw the impact of humanity on climate. The installation looks like plastic, the very waste we should be avoiding, but it is in fact made of a fully biodegradable baterian biopolymer.The short text of Elisée Reclus was engraved on a wooden panel, that served as a mold for the biopolymer. The perishable nature of the material – it can be composted in a few weeks – offers a strong contrast to the engraved message, which, even if it is 150 years old, still remains contemporary. Elisée Reclus (1830-1905) was, a french geographer, teacher, writer and anarchist. 150 years ago he wrote the two volumes of “La Terre: Description des Phénomènes de la Vie du Globe”. The views he exposes in these very little known books makes him a pioneer of ecology and social geography. One of the reasons his work has been almost forgotten is his political engagement as an anarchist. He was banned from France for 10 years for having taken part in the Commune uprising in Paris in 1971. He lived for a time in Lugano and near Montreux, before settling in Belgium, where he died in 1905.“ The issue of understanding in man’s work what embellishes or instead contributes to hurt nature can seem futile to so-called positive minds: but it is still a primordial issue to address. The development of humanity is intimately linked to the surrounding nature. A secret harmony is established between earth and the peoples she feeds, and when careless societies allow themselves to lay hands on what makes the beauty of their realm, they always eventually regret and seek repentance. Where the soil has become ugly, where poetry has disappeared from the landscape, imaginaries dwindle, minds shrink, quotidian and servitude take over the souls and bring torpor and death. Among the causes which, in the history of humanity, have already led to the disappearance of so many civilisations, one would have to take into account the brutal violence with which most of nations treated the nourishing land.
